Glossary Of Relevant Terms

A1C—A mathmatical sum that represent how much glucose is in the blood stream. The AIC goal is typically less than 7%.

beta cells—Cells that produce insulin. Beta cells are located in an section of the pancreas called the Islets.

bladder—A hollow organ drains fluids from the kidneys.

blood glucose—The glucose level of sugar in the blood stream from food we eat. Glucose is carried through the bloodstream to provide energy to all of the body’s living cells.

 

carbohydrate—All foods are Carbohydrates, carbohydrates are sugars often referred to as simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates consist of starches derived from eating such things as breads and pasta. Using insulin supplied by the pancreas, the body takes all carbohydrates and converts them into energy or glucose.

 

glucose—A sugar in our blood and a source of energy for our bodies.

 

high blood glucose—A condition that occurs in which a large or over consumption of high carb foods has occurred.

 

hormone—Insulin is a hormone. A chemical that is despensed from bodily organs to help other organs function.

 

insulin—A hormone that helps the body converts carbs to blood glucose for energy.

 

pancreas—An organ in the body located behind the stomach, that produce a hormone called insulin.

 

type 1 diabetes—A condition in which the pancreas makes little or no insulin.

type 2 diabetes—A condition in which the pancreas does not generate enough supply of insulin to process carbs into energy.
